Today I wanted to take a moment and address a really common question that comes up from my sellers who are going to have their properties on the market during the holidays.
Most all of our clients want to know, do I decorate my house for the holidays?
Absolutely, yes!
Nothing brings out the emotion and warmth of the home to a new possible buyer than walking into your home and seeing it decorated for the holidays, and imagining their own family celebrating holidays there in the years to come. So we absolutely do want to bring out the holiday decorations.
But we want to do things a little different…
Tip #1: Don’t Decorate Every Inch of the House
We don’t want to decorate every nook and cranny like we might in years past. We want it to say “holiday,” But we also don’t want it to say, “cluttered and over done.” So make sure when we are decorating for the holidays, we hit the high points.
For example, have a Christmas tree, decorate your mantel, or nicely decorate your table. Do some things like that without going completely overboard on every single little area.
Tip #2: Don’t Skip the Lights
Yes, you can have Christmas lights. Christmas lights are totally fine, especially since it starts to get dark a little bit earlier this time of year. Having Christmas lights can be a great way to light up the exterior of your home if a buyer can’t come and see it until after dark.
Tip #3: Do Skip The Inflatables
Now, I don’t mean to upset the kids, but I would lay off doing the inflatables. Those don’t look quite as good for pictures and showing purposes, especially when they’re deflated laying in your yard. So again, we want to do it just a little bit more simple than we would in years past but still bring in the homey elegance of the holiday season.
Tip #4: Keep the Decorations Timely
Holiday decorations can date your photos. For instance, if you have Halloween decorations up and we plan to put your property on the market right after Thanksgiving, it can make a property look like it’s already been on the market for several weeks, when in reality, it’s just hitting the market.
So we really want to make sure whatever holiday season your home is going to be on the market, that those are the decorations up when the photos are done so that it makes the property look timely.
